Washington -- Ahead of today's House subcommittee markup for self-driving legislation, the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets issued the following statement from general counsel David Strickland:

“We commend House Energy & Commerce members’ efforts to bring self-driving technology to U.S. roads. Nearly 40,000 lives are lost in road crashes each year and nearly 94% of those crashes are caused by human error. By removing humans from behind the wheel, self-driving vehicles offer the opportunity to save lives and enhance mobility.

“The Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets supports legislation that clarifies federal and state roles and expands vehicle exemptions. States should be discouraged from contributing to a patchwork of laws and regulations and increased vehicle exemptions will help this life-saving technology continue to make tremendous strides in testing and development.

“We look forward to continue working with Members of Congress and policymakers on self-driving policy solutions to address our shared goals: saving lives, improving public safety, and increasing accessibility for all.”
