An autonomous vehicle (AV) is defined as Levels 4 and 5 by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). At SAE Level 4 and above, vehicles will be equipped with sensing and computing systems that do not rely on a human to take over in any situation within a defined operation domain. In contrast, vehicles with other levels of automation are advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) with features that provide convenience and added safety, but the driver still has an active role in the driving process.
