WASHINGTON – The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) released the following statement in response to the introduction of the Connected Vehicle Security Act, a bipartisan bill from Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH) and Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI):
The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA) supports the goal of Senators Moreno and Slotkin to strengthen American national security. AVIA is eager to work with them to ensure the Connected Vehicle Security Act does not create unintended consequences that harm the American autonomous vehicle companies leading the charge against Chinese competitors.
It is imperative that any legislative action in the connected vehicle space be measured, targeted, and workable. For example, the Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) recently led a thoughtful, multi-year process that resulted in effectively barring Chinese autonomous vehicle technologies from the U.S. market. The BIS rule represents a serious, risk-based approach to addressing connected vehicle technology with ties to foreign adversaries, including China. AVIA encourages Congress to work in close coordination with the Department of Commerce and other relevant agencies in crafting legislation regarding connected vehicles.
For the U.S. to win the global AV race, policymakers must support the American companies that are deploying this life-saving technology here at home. This legislation underscores the critical need for a federal policy framework on autonomous vehicles. China is without a doubt the nearest strategic competitor to the United States when it comes to autonomous vehicles, and U.S. policymakers must support deployment of this life-saving technology so the U.S. wins the global race on AVs.
AVIA looks forward to working constructively with Senators Moreno and Slotkin on a targeted approach that furthers American excellence on autonomous vehicles and protects our citizens from foreign threats.
