WASHINGTON – Today, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association (AVIA), released a statement from CEO Jeff Farrah following the passage of Assembly Bill 33 out of the Assembly Transportation Committee:
“Californians are embracing autonomous vehicles—riding in them, trusting them, and seeing the benefits firsthand. AVs are improving safety, expanding mobility, and unlocking new economic opportunities. But Assembly Bill 33 would abruptly cut that progress short by implementing a sweeping prohibition on the autonomous delivery of all “commercial goods”. In other words, the misguided legislation would permit an autonomous vehicle to safely transport your loved one, but that same vehicle could not to carry your groceries, packages, or even a burrito.
"That’s not just bad policy. It’s bad logic.
"AB 33 also overlooks what AVs have already provided Californians. During the pandemic, AVs delivered medical supplies to hospitals and meals to vulnerable communities. Today, they’re helping families access affordable food, supporting small businesses, and strengthening supply chains. None of that could occur if AB 33 becomes law.
"Lawmakers should reject this bizarre proposal and keep the state at the forefront of transportation and technology."
