Washington – Today, the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association released the following statement from CEO Jeff Farrah on the confirmation of Derek Barrs for Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA):

“AVIA applauds the confirmation of Derek Barrs to lead the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. With his long history and deep knowledge of the trucking industry, Administrator Barrs will hit the ground running at a time when the future of freight movement is being reimagined.

“Autonomous trucks will be part of the future of freight, and they are already operating safely on American roads. This technology will help strengthen supply chains, address the persistent driver shortage, and improve road safety. We look forward to working with Administrator Barrs and Secretary Duffy to ensure FMCSA policies support American innovation and uphold the highest safety standards.”

The United States is facing a truck driver shortage and must move 50% more freight by 2050 to meet economic demand. Autonomous trucking is an essential tool to strengthen supply chains, expand job opportunities, and improve roadway safety.
