WASHINGTON -- The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association released the following statement from CEO Jeff Farrah in response to the announcement made this week by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to approve a warning beacon exemption petition for autonomous trucks.
“AVIA commends FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy for authorizing the use of cab mounted warning beacons for autonomous trucks. This move will enhance safety by replacing warning triangles that unnecessarily put truck drivers in harm's way. Administrator Barrs’ action is a significant advancement in establishing a federal policy framework that advances American leadership in autonomous vehicles.
"The exemption granted by FMCSA is the latest in a series of consequential moves by Secretary Duffy as part of his Innovation Agenda. Secretary Duffy’s leadership is greatly appreciated by the autonomous vehicle industry.”
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (“FMCSA”) approved an exemption petition for a five-year exemption from the warning device requirements for Level 4 ADS-equipped commercial motor vehicles. This exemption allows carriers who are operating autonomous trucks to use cab-mounted warning beacons in lieu of traditional warning devices.
This development was first announced by FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs at AVIA’s Autonomy Summit in Austin, Texas.
